It’s really summertime here and I’ve been cooking up in my apartment for a few days now trying to finish this piece. Kind of makes me wish I was CHILLIN’ in space, haha! Except not really.
Because then I’d be dead.
Anyway, this is theme of the legendary Pokémon of time and space, Dialga and Palkia, from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. I was super excited when D/P came out for the DS in 2007 and played for three day non-stop. Afterward, I got kind of burnt out on the fact that the games just recycled the whole evil-team-seeks-legendary-Pokémon-to-manipulate-the-elements plot from Ruby/Sapphire, and I began to question whether or not I liked the direction the RPG series was taking (thankfully it got better, but I digress).
The original battle theme from these games captured Dialga/Palkia’s reign over the chaotic, so that’s what I sought to emphasize in this piece, using orchestral clusters, percussion, and some atonal effects to paint an eerie, unsettling sonic landscape. The beginning of my piece pays homage to composer Bernard Herrmann of Alfred Hitchock’s films, who pioneered that “B Science Fiction movie” sound. The rest is influenced by Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” with lots of yummy brass to herald the arrival of the PokéGods.
